The owner should first have the pet fitted with a microchip before leaving from home at a nearby veterinary surgery. After fitting the microchip, the pet must be vaccinated to prevent rabies. One must also check that the vaccine stimulates a satisfactory level of immunity against rabies by means of a blood test. The pet must be treated against ticks and tapeworms 24 to 48 hours before traveling so as not to spread any such parasites.

A pet passport having details about pet’s vaccination as well as health record is essential in many countries and demands implantation of microchip. Similarly, your pet should be taken to your vet for a checkup after returning from the holiday. In case you are going on a domestic holiday with your pet, you have to consider practical conditions such as climatic conditions as well as food and water availability.
