All You Need to Know about Designer Dog Breeds
Ever heard of designer dogs? There has been an interesting trend of wanting these dogs. Essentially they are a combination of two pure bred dogs. For example the so called labradoodle which is bred through crossing a Labrador with a poodle. Similarly, a cockapoo is the combination of a poodle and a cocker spaniel.
Since the media has reported on many such a designer dog, the demand for them has risen tremendously. It seems that everyone wants a designer dog.
But don’t be mistaken to believe that it is only ordinary people who want to own these dogs. Even celebrities all over the world are trying to get their hands on them.
With there being all kinds of interesting trends these days, one would think that the designer dog breeding is another recent invention. But it is not. In fact, the first designer dogs were being bred a long, long time ago. Queen Vitoria, for example, was known to breed her dogs in a similar fashion in the 1890’s.
A great lover of dogs, we have her majesty to thank for bringing the much loved Collie to popularity as a breed - but that’s another story!
Moreover, she also gets a lot of credit for the classic Rough Collie - the dog breed that became even more popular with the Disney film “Lassie”.
Obtaining suitable purebred Borzoi dogs from her Russian relatives, Queen “Vic” crossed these with her beloved Scottish Collies to produce this well-known breed.
Another designer dog that goes way back is the following: The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. This breed was a loyal companion to many kings and queens in the middle ages, and it was revived in the 1920’s. It is a toy dog and lovely if you wish to have company.
As you can see, designer dogs are not an invention of our days. With that being said, the success of a new designer dog, back then as well as now, mostly depends on crossing two breeds that will create a caring, affectionate, and healthy dog.
