Boston Terrier Health Is Important, But So Are Other Concerns
Dogs, like people, are all different, their breeds, natures and health concern vary and there are up and down sides to owing any dog. Boston Terrier health is one consideration if you want a dog of this breed, but it is not the only consideration. Terriers can be quite neurotic and Bostons may drool, snort, snore, wheeze, snuffle and break wind.
All terriers are sturdy animals who are not delicate, but they are small. On the whole Bostons are good natured, have beautiful round, expressive eyes, a short snout, jowls, short glossy fur which is easy to take care of and they are not lap dogs. However if you give them the opportunity they will sit on your lap. They are passionate about playing with balls and playing other games.
Not every breed of dog is an ideal choice for everyone, but if your heart is set on owning a Boston Terrier, nothing we say here will be able to stop you. Be careful when you buy yours, that it is from a reputable breeder and has not come from a puppy mill. Don’t support pet stores as these may be mill dogs, and this heinous breeding methodology must be wiped out. A good breeder will allow you to inspect their premises and you should be happy with the way you see the dogs being taken care of.
Boston Terriers may have an unstable temperament if they are purchased from a breeder who does not know what they are doing. They may produce puppies that require behavior modification, but all dogs need obedience training, no matter what their temperament. A neurotic dog is a handful, they bark or yap needlessly, can be hyperactive and even aggressive.
Most terriers show some symptoms of neuroses; this is what makes many of the breeds so energetic and charming. With training and plenty of love and attention, the neuroses can be controlled, but Bostons don’t like doing what they are told, so you need to be more strong willed than they are. House breaking may take 6 months of constant attention, but pretty much every dog I have ever owned, has taken this long, and I don’t think this is abnormal.
Like all short nosed breeds the Boston Terrier is relatively noisy, they snore, snort, snuffle, grunt and wheeze, something which I find charming, but not everyone does. If they have very loose jowls, they will slobber water when they drink, and may even drool after eating or drinking.
A dog which does not fart, is as far as I am concerned, not a real dog. They are like people in this regard, but Bostons have the ability to clear a room fast if they are not on a good diet. The flatulence is easily controlled by feeding them fresh meat and other fresh foods.
Again, because of the short nose, other health problems may arise. Bostons are also often over-bred and if you are not aware of their background, they may have health issues. All you really need to do is be aware of what can arise.
Like all dogs, each and every Boston Terrier has their own unique personality. You get very energetic dogs and also very calm Bostons. Some are as hard headed as heck and others, sugar would not melt in their mouths, some Bostons are very serious, while others are total goofballs. But whatever your Boston’s personality, the most important thing is that they will always love you and care for you, so make sure you love them and care for them too.
