Dog behavior growling

With strays and watch dogs we see it all the time, the dog growls when someone invades the territory they feel that is under their control. Growling for a dog is a natural instinct that expresses aggression. In a housing environment there is no place for such behavior and if the dog starts growling at you or other family members, then it is time to handle.
The first step is to check with a veterinarian if your dog has an ailment which you have overseen. Aggressive behavior, growling and even snapping at people very often displays that a medical condition is hurting your dog, make sure you take him to a vet for a checkup. If the vet finds that your dog is in a good condition and that there is medically nothing wrong with it, then you have a behavior disorder on your hands.
Most likely the dog figures that he is your or your family member’s equal or superior. This means that he sees himself as a leader and you are all followers in the family he regards as his pack. You need to do behavior adjustment, not only with your dog, but you and your family as well. The dog needs to understand that the humans in the pack are his superiors and that a dog needs to obey them.
There are several ways how to accomplish this, the easiest way is to hire a behaviorist. The professional dog re-educator can assist you and your family in establishing the right pecking order and help you with the obedience training. If the whole family participates, then additional training will not be needed.
If you are doing the re-education on your own, then you need to establish boundaries and limitations which will explain to the dog that you are the leader. For instance, the dog cannot walk first through a door, it needs to follow you, because you are the leader. The dog is not eating first, the family is eating first and then the dog is being fed. The dog shall not be allowed to sleep in your bed with you, it will get the impression that it is your equal. This is the way you should handle your dog, in order to keep it at bay.
If you have a growling puppy, then a trainer is a better choice than a behaviorist. It is important that you, as the owner, establish your dominance and are able to control your animal. Dog training allows for certain obedience and behavior patterns to be trained, but it is you who will be controlling the dog outside of the training facility.

Dog_training_fetch

Every dog owner would like to be able to play a good game of fetch with her or her dog every once in a while. However, dog training fetch is not as simple as it may look. Though most dogs will gladly run after a ball or stick when thrown and will retrieve it, most untrained dogs will then play keep away with their owners.

Thus, the first step in dog training fetch is to teach your dog how to drop an item. The best way to teach your dog to drop an item is distraction. During your first step of dog training fetch, while your dog is holding the item you want him or her to drop, hold a treat by the dog’s nose and say “Drop it,” at the same time. As soon as your dog drops the toy for the treat, give the dog the toy and praise him or her.

Once your dog has mastered this first form of “drop it” in dog training fetch, the next step is to get your dog to drop an item without a treat. Usually if the first form of “drop it” is truly mastered in dog training fetch, your dog will simply drop an item without the treat when you say “drop it.” When your dog does perform “drop it” without the treat incentive, make sure to give the dog a treat after he or she drops the item in question.

After this, comes the easy part in dog training fetch. Just throw a toy and say “fetch” as your dog instintively runs after the toy. When he or she brings the toy back, ask him or her to “drop it” and give the dog a treat when he or she does. As your dog gets better at fetching in dog training fetch, make sure to limit the number of food treats you give your dog and replace them with pets and other forms of praise. Eventually in dog training fetch you should not have to say “drop it;” your dog will simply know to drop the toy to get a treat or praise.

Make sure to practice dog training fetch in a safe area, such as your enclosed backyard. You do not want to throw an item for you dog to fetch into a street or other busy area. Additionally, in dog training fetch, as in all dog training techniques, try to practice the trick first in an isolated area before attempting it in front of other dogs. Your dog will be less distracted and will be able to pick up on the dog training fetch much faster.

There is an ongoing debate about whether or not crate training dogs is beneficial.

With crate training the dog is put in a cage, usually made out of plastic or metal that?s about the size of your dog, for shorter periods of time over the day.

People in favor state that crate training gives the dogs a refuge where he can ?hide? and feel comfortable. It?s much like a little room just for him. Your dog feels safe in there, because of all the toys and other objects with a familiar smell. It?s his retreat from the hectic world around him.

Supporters of crate training will tell you that it is much easier to potty train your puppy. As dogs don?t like to soil their nest they will wait until they?re set lose before doing a pee or a pooh.

On the contrary some people say that it isn?t normal to lock up a dog in a small cage. A dog should have his freedom to explore, sniff and chew when growing up.

They will also state that too many animals will be too long in their crates, which in the end means that the whole idea of potty training won?t work. They give the typical example of pet shops where you can see how sometimes puppies are playing in their own pooh.

No doubt both sides have some good and some bad points. Objective studies on the issue are scarce and equally divided. Provided certain ‘rules’ are respected, there’s probably no harm, and possibly some good, in crate training.

Most experts recognize that you shouldn’t let your dog too much time in the crate. Your puppy needs to exercise and needs to evacuate. So never leave your dog longer than 2 hours in his crate.

Opponents worry that dogs in their crate can harm themselves when they make attempts to open the crate to escape, or because they?re bored. Always use a safe crate, one that?s designed especially for dogs. The crate should be sturdy enough, so it can resist your dogs? attempts to get out. And above all make sure the crate can?t fall over.

People in favor of crate training say that a crate trained dog is much easier to travel with. They?re used to the crate, that is also used for car, train and air travel. They are comfortable in their crate, above all if they have some of their own toys with them.

Critics suggest that (except in cases of permanent re-location) it’s best to leave pets at home. Apart from short trips to the grocery store or vet, animals are better off in familiar territory.

Though this debate isn’t likely to be settled anytime soon, using common sense is the best way to judge the beneficial effects for your pet. Try leaving the door open after a few weeks of training and see whether they stay in or out of the crate. Let your dog be the judge.
