Akbash Dog - A One of a Kind LGD
Akbash, a Turkish word that means “white head” refers to a breed of livestock guarding dog. Akbash Dog is one of the two breeds native to Turkey. The lean body that is covered by the pristine white double coat gives this breed of LGD a magnificent appearance. The pristine white coat is the benchmark of this Turkish breed. The Akbash Dog has two kinds of coat - a medium length coat that smoothly covers the lean body and a long and wavy coat that forms ruff on the neck and gives the dog a lion-like appearance.
The Akbash Dogs have been guarding sheep and goats for centuries thus they have learned to distinguish a safe and accepted situation from one that poses a danger to the livestock it is guarding. Akbash Dogs would bite animals that break away animals to get them back to the flock but their bites would not cause the animals serious harm. An Akbash Dog would commonly find an elevated spot where it can have a good vantage point to watch the livestock. This breed of working dog would thrive well in conditions where their abilities are utilized.
This Turkish breed is a natural animal guardian, one that has an admirable protective instinct. These dogs are independent workers and if danger to the animals is perceived, these dogs would move with alacrity even without the orders of the master. In recent years, more and more Akbash Dogs were transformed from being LGDs to companion dogs.
Akbash Dogs make wonderful companions because these are intelligent, loyal and very protective dogs. It is typical for these dogs to form a strong bond with their owners. These endearing qualities are the reasons why Akbash Dogs are well accepted as home companions. Accustomed to protecting livestock, these dogs can be depended to protect the family as well.
Akbash Dogs would not need extensive grooming as they are naturally clean dogs and they do not have a doggie smell. These are not very active dogs in spite of the athletic stature. These dogs would lie down practically all day guarding livestock. Unlike older dogs that would have low activity requirements, young dogs would benefit from being given opportunities to exercise. Exercise would be important for the physical development of a young dog thus it has to be allowed to play unrestricted by a leash. However, owners must ensure that the play area of the pet is well fenced as Akbash Dogs have the tendency to wander.
