How to Make an Older Dog Feel Loved

Just like humans, dogs that get older will slow down a little bit in everything they do. Generally speaking, when this is the case with your dog, you will want to make sure he sees the vet regularly, so that the vet can keep a close eye on him and his health status.

Regular visits will ensure that your dog gets the best preventative care and immediate medical attention, should there be something wrong. You will also get advice on the nutritional needs of your older dog, which is helpful.

It is recommended that you provide your dog with ample high-protein diet, appropriate vitamins and minerals and easily digested carbohydrate foods.

The diet should also be fiber-rich and low in calories. Of course, you do not want to make your dog go hungry, he should always feel full after the meal, but you do not want him to become overweight either, because this is a serious issue.

But there is more that your dog needs: Your love. If he is old now, he has probably spent most of his life with you. He will have loved you for a long time, and you will have loved him. As he gets older and older, that love will become more important than anything.

It is your responsibility to help keep your dog stay in the best possible shape by taking him out for regular walks to help him exercise his aged muscles.

So walk your dog and play with him in order to keep in physically fit. Also be mindful that the older a dog gets, the more he will despise changes around him. Stability is a great factor to his well-being at this point - so avoid changing things around for him.

As you can imagine, grooming will still be very important. Continue your good grooming practice even when he gets older. This will make him feel good, and he will feel loved and cared for.

Spending time with him by taking him to the vet or walking and playing with him is one of the best ways to make him feel your presence and support in his aging years.

How to Make Home-Made Food for Your Dog

In most cases dog owners love their pets so much that they want the very best for them in terms of health. And homemade dog food is a reliable source of all the necessary nutrition to keep a dog energetic, happy and healthy.

It is very obvious in these days that human health widely depends on our diet and the same is true to almost the same degree for dog.

But be reminded that there are some foods that they should not eat like chocolate and too much animal fat.

So homemade food should contain all the ingredients your dog needs to grow and stay healthy. There are a lot of good recipes available that you can use.

If you have a puppy you see how fast he grows. He can only do this when he gets enough calcium for his bones to grow. Other ingredients are good for growing his muscles and smooth tissue. So make sure he gets everything he needs.

Whereas for puppies it is quite obvious why a healthy diet is so important you may think it is not so important anymore for an adult dog. But this is not the case. Think of how much energy an active dog consumes every day that has to be replaced. And the older your dog gets the more important it is to support his organs with the best food available.

Other then calcium that we mentioned protein and carbohydrates should be an ingredient to any meal that we prepare and serve our dog. This means: Add some meat, veggies and carbs (such as noodles).

Cook meat in water until nearly cooked and then add the rest of the ingredients. Cook for a further 10 minutes. Don’t add any salts.

Like for humans it is not necessary to do the cooking each and every day. Why not making one’s life easier and prepare the food for more than one day? Divide the big portion into smaller ones for daily use and freeze them in separate bags or containers.

Puppy Dental Care

While most puppies are born with no teeth, you can be assured that your puppy will have a full set of sharp primary teeth by the age of around 12 weeks.

Each time your puppy is visiting the vet for a vaccination, always get the vet to check over his mouth. You want to ensure that his teeth are coming through in the right position, to prevent any palate damage.

But of course your puppy will not keep his primary teeth for too long. During month four, his adult teeth start coming out and within three more months the full set is complete.

If at all possible, try to have your vet check the adult teeth as they are coming through in month 5 or 6. He will be able to tell whether everything is working out well.

In addition to the regular check-ups, you should also make sure to brush your puppy’s teeth regularly. This should be done from the third month onwards. But never ever use human tooth paste, because it would make your dog sick; use puppy toothpaste instead.

When you first start brushing his teeth, do not worry too much about how effective your brushing is. What is more important at this stage is getting him used to the process.

Using an extra soft brush would be nice of you in the beginning. Then apply some toothpaste, even let your dog taste it first, and then gently brush his teeth. Just like with kids, use small slow motions. And give him a treat afterwards.

Do not be surprised if your pup seems unhappy about the teeth brushing procedure at some point during the third and fifth month. If this happens, simply stop for a little while.

Many puppies end up with their gums being painful at the time they are losing their primary teeth and brushing can be unpleasant for them. Simply wait until he has a full set of adult teeth in place and restart the process.

Two things that every dog owners absolutely needs to have are the leash and the collar. Both are important and especially the collar will make your dog different from all other dogs.

Nowadays, with so many unique collars for sale, the collar can simply be a fashion statement too. The leash, though, is more of a tool, really. It will help you stay in touch with your dog and communicate with him.

With a simple and careful tug or pull, you can tell your dog where you want to go, what pace you want to walk, when to go and when to stop.

In selecting a collar, a dog owner must always seek the advice of their veterinarian because he can assess which type of collar might be suitable to your dog. This assessment comes from his broad knowledge of your dog’s medical and breed background.

Also ask yourself: Is your dog well-behaved? Or does he cause trouble when walking? If he is in fact well-behaved, you might simply want to go with a regular collar and leash.

However, if this is not the case and you often find yourself struggling with your dog, you might want to consider a slip collar. This could be potentially helpful.

If the slip collar does not seem to sort out your dog’s pulling issue, you may want to resort to an illusion collar. This may be useful if you do not get along with your dog otherwise.

The illusion collar also offers several creative ways to control your dog’s behavior. Placing the illusion collar on the lower part of your dog’s neck is going to help your dog pull you more effectively.

If you do not want your dog to pull as much, simply put the collar on the upper part of his neck. This way he will really feel the connection to you, and he is more likely to respond appropriately. Try it, if you like, it might be a great help.

Dog Training: No More Digging!

If your dog is digging, it can create a serious problem. Dogs that dig under fences can escape and might even get hit by cars or encountering other dangers.

Of course, digging can also ruin just about any garden, which can be quite frustrating. But, fortunately, you do not need to necessarily put up with.

One reasons for dogs to dig is their hormones. If it is the mating season, and their body wants to get past that fence, they will dig. It will be like an uncontrollable urge that they cannot resist. So neutering or spaying your dog could change this.

Moreover, dogs sometimes dig for the simple reason of being too warm. If the outside temperature is high, and they want to cool down, digging a hole and lying in it will be a nice change.

So the simplest thing for you to do to keep your dog from digging is to make sure there is some shady spot that your dog has access to. Also give him plenty of water and chances are, he will not feel the need to dig a cool hole.

Also keep in mind that digging takes energy. So, take him for long walks and play with him a lot. If he is exhausted, he is much less likely to dig.

Quality time you spend with your dog helping him getting rid of his energy in a positive way could cure digging for good.

If you catch your dog in the act of digging, squirt him with a garden hose. He won’t like the unexpected spraying. Once he realizes spraying is the consequence for digging, he’ll quit digging to avoid getting sprayed.

Digging can be the result of boredom so give your dog lots of toys to keep him busy. You can buy hard rubber chew toys filled with treats at most pet stores, as well as balls and rope toys. You might discover that he would rather play than dig.

Dog Training Made Easy

Dogs are pack animals, and they are genetically designed to follow their pack leader. Yet, it sometimes might seem to dog lovers that they are anything but inclined to listen to their owners.

Some unwanted behaviors such as aggressive barking, constant chewing on objects, jumping and running havoc into your home can put stress in any kind hearted owner. To correct such behaviors, owners opt to have their dogs trained.

Dog training often relies on classical conditioning. Classical conditioning is a psychological understanding of how dogs come to love some things and hate others.

If you punish your dog for his negative behavior, he will come to understand that this behavior is not fun for him. This will teach him to stop doing it or simply to avoid doing it to begin with. He will do so because he associates those actions with a bad outcome for himself.

In contrast, if he does something that we want him to repeat, we can condition him to do so by rewarding him for his desirable behavior. This way he will likely want to do it again.

Also be mindful of the fact that teaching your dog at a young age is the best you can do for him. He will be very impressionable then, and he might find learning quiet easy. So start as soon as you can.

With that being said, the first 16 weeks of your puppy’s life are extremely important, since what he will learn in that time period will be the foundation for his whole life. So always keep that in mind.

Also be mindful of the fact that dog training takes time. That’s just the way it is. Some dogs are faster learners and others are slower, but all of them will take some time to train. Such is life and you should not have unrealistic expectations when it comes to that.

Another thing to be conscious of is consistency. Consistency is the key to dog training; just as much as patience, really. I cannot overemphasize this point enough. Always be consistent in your commands.

Happy Puppies 101

When people bring a new dog home, they usually feel that from then on he is a full member of their family. The arrival of the dog is quite an event, and a lot of the family’s attention will be directed his way in the beginning.

In order to ensure that living together will be a pleasure, it is important to think about helping the dog to behave himself. And this is where dog training comes in.

Usually, puppies learn better than older dogs because they learn much more quickly, since they are quite impressionable. With constant carrying out of the taught activities, there’s a huge chance that they’ll memorize it for the rest of their lives.

Moreover, puppies want to bond with you, as they are looking for someone who can provide the love and caring their mothers did.

This doesn’t mean, however, that adult ones may not be trained anymore. It’s possible to teach those who may have not been taught any trick or activity before, or those who may have been taught something but already have forgotten them.

As with puppies, the keys are: Patience and consistency. Adult dogs are well able to learn, whether it be new tricks or ones they used to know, but forgot. However, when you think about what trick you want to teach your dog, keep a few things in mind.

Keep in mind that dogs are quite smart: If you try to teach them tricks that are well outside their potential, they may feel frustrated themselves and it might make them sad. That is to say, do not expect things your dog will simply not be able to perform.

Speaking of which, it’s important to know that there are certain tricks or activities some dogs aren’t capable of doing.

For example, expecting a fairly large Great Dane to perform standing on his hind legs, and skip and dance that way, would simply be ridiculous. Always be mindful of your own dog’s personality, temperament, ability to learn, size and so on. And then only teach tricks that suit him.

Dealing with epilepsy dogs often have is a disease that is characterized by recurring seizures. It is important to note that not all seizures are indicative of epilepsy. The disease is caused by abnormal brain function where electrical impulses malfunction and cause the well-known seizures. It is a disease that occurs in all breeds of dogs, and is thought to be genetic.

Epilepsy is a disease that can be divided into two types. The primary form of epilepsy is genetic. This form of epilepsy is passed down through the dogs parents. By looking at a dogs heredity you will often see other cases of the disease.

The other type of the disease is often caused by a lack of nutrients, or a toxin in the environment. Lead and other toxic substances can trigger the epileptic seizures, as can a lack of certain vitamins.

Seizures are a main indicator of epilepsy. However there are all sorts of seizures. The seizures categories in humans are similar to those found in dogs. The most sever are grand mal. In these seizures, dog’s will often times fall to the floor and look to have lost control over its motor facilities.

Seizures come in all degrees. There are some seizures which are very slight. The dog may appear to be shaking and or twitching. It may not appear to even be a seizure to many people.

Having a dog with epilepsy can present many problems, however you can find ways to help treat the dog. While there is no cure for epilepsy there are medications that can treat it. These medications can limit the amount of seizures or limit the degree to which the seizures occur. Some of the medications are the same medications that humans use. Valium is used in some instances, as well as neurontin, are some of the medications.

One of the first things any dog owner should do if they notice something that resembles a seizure is to take notice of everything the dog is doing. They should try and remember what the dog was doing before, and what it does after. All of this information will help the vet determine the type of epilepsy and how it can be treated.

Keeping watch over your dogs eating habits is very important. Besides what food they are eating, it is important to observe and see if there are any poisons or toxins in the area which they have access to.

Once the seizure has occurred, your veterinarian will conduct a series of tests. These tests will determine if your dog has epilepsy. These tests will range from determining the level of lead in your dogs blood, to taking advanced imaging tests of the dogs brain.

You should try and keep the area where the dog is going to be as clean as possible. Any toxic substances such as lead must not be allowed to be near the dog, as these can lead to seizures. After the dog has been prescribed medication you have to watch for reactions. Negative side effects such as liver damage are often associated with epilepsy drugs.

Some of the drug treatments can injure a dog if they are halted all together. Like any medication they should be slowly lowered and not completely stopped. Withdrawal all at once can cause injury to the dog.

Even though a dog cannot be cured of epilepsy there are drugs and lifestyle changes that can make the dogs life more tolerable. The fact that it has a disease does not mean that its quality of life will be terrible. With medication and diligent observation many dogs with epilepsy live happy lives.

The Way To Breed Dogs The Good Method

Everyone loves puppies, however, many don’t realize the amount of planning and work goes into preparing to breed a litter. Before breeding dogs, it’s important for the breeder to do the proper research and ensure that they’re pairing both most compatible dogs possible. This is often a time consuming and sometimes hard task, but it’s worthwhile eventually to produce a littler of beautiful, healthy puppies.

Before any person sets out to breed dogs, they must ensure that they’re doing this for the right reasons. Many people attempt to breed their dog because they want a different one just like it or they want their children to witness the miracle of birth. The only reason that anyone ought to ever breed a dog is if they really believe that they’re increasing the breed by breeding their own dogs.

Before breeding dogs, it’s important to understand any hereditary issues that usually affect a specific breed. Many breeds have problems with their eyes and also their hips & joints, heart conditions, allergies and epilepsy. If even one of several dogs is a carrier for a specific disease, it shouldn’t be bred because there’s a strong possibility that the puppies will also carry the disease.

Both dogs must also have a complete medical examination prior to breeding, especially to check and make sure that they don’t have brucellosis. Brucellosis is a ailment that may cause sterility in male and female dogs. It can cause puppies to be aborted or to die soon after they’re born, so it is extremely important that a dog with brucellosis isn’t permitted to breed.

A breeder must also carefully research the pedigree of both dogs before breeding. They need to try to look for dogs that will exhibit the strengths of the breed and offset the weaknesses. It is very important to find the perfect representation of the breed and ensure that they’re compatible. For instance, if they’re both carriers of the same hereditary disease, they shouldn’t be bred.

Every morning two of my neighbors and I go out for a walk. It is called the “rolling thunder walking club” because when we walk the ground shakes. It’s not only good exercise however good companionship and lively discussions about relevant events from the Colorado Rockies to all the political shenanigans occurring in Washington.

Almost all of our walks are unadventurous, though we’ve developed quite a following. People see us every day and wave to us operating by or stop and speak with us. If we obtain lots more people in our group we should have a parade permit.

Well today my two friends weren’t there. One plays golf on Thursday and also the other had an unexcused absence. Need to speak to her later.

Going back two dogs came charging up the hill at me. Usually dogs will bark away and then veer off. However, not today. They came perilously close to attacking me. It is an excellent thing that I had my new Mace pepper gun with me. I’d it in my hand and my finger on the trigger ready in case.

The owner of the dogs known as the dogs back from the comfort and ease of her front door way. She was so aren’t bothered that she could not even get out of her doorway and go after her dogs. Completely content if the dog would’ve attacked me I guess.

In my experience that was the turning point in my sight on dogs running loose. From now on, it’s an all-out war. I’ve 158 stitches from trying to break up a dog fight with two of my dogs and my kids in the same room. So my fear of dogs in dog attacks & dog bites is pretty awful. Please be careful when see the dog’s tail move down.
