Aggressive dog training can become necessary when a dog exhibits signs of dominant behavior. Often this is manifested in not obeying commands that you give out - maybe never obeying, maybe only obeying when the dog feels like it. Growling and barking can also be interpreted as aggressive behaviour but in fact may be due to the dog feeling scared or threatened.

If your dog has tendency to be territorial, you may need some aggressive dog training. Signs of being territorial are: growling and barking when someone comes near the property, acting possessively about their food bowl or toys or even you, fighting with other dogs or chasing after animals, cars and other dogs.

It’s great if your dog protects you and your property. Indeed, many people get a dog for just that reason. However, you must ensure that this doesn’t turn into a more general aggressive behavior. It’s essential that your dog never feels that he is in charge of you, you must always be in charge of him and his environment. This way you can avoid the constant stress that accompanies an aggressive dog.

For example, sometimes owners of small dogs are overly protective of their dogs and this results in the little dog displaying the same behaviour to gain affection. Try to correct this with aggressive dog training.

Use the ‘Time Out’ approach. Every time he exhibits snarling, growling, aggressive behaviour, say ‘No’ firmly, leave the room and close the door for 30 seconds.

Dogs who bark at everything that passes your yard may need to be muzzled first after barking, and then you should place your hand over the muzzle and say “Quiet”. When your dog is calm, and quiet, praise and reward him.

Once you identify aggressive behaviour, you must change your behaviour if you want your dog to behave.

Check your own actions. Do you reward your dog for bad behavior. For example, does he jump up to greet you and you really enjoy that and shower him with attention? If so, how then can you be angry when he does that to everyone else. Check your own actions before thinking you need aggressive dog training.
