In spite of the close association between man and dogs, these animals’ aggression have resulted to dog attacks that caused minor to fatal injuries. Every year more than four million dog owners and non-dog owners needs medical attention for minor to fatal injuries resulting from dog attacks. Dog breeds that are utilized for protection works are specifically trained to be aggressive. The significant difference dogs made to humans way of life is probably the reason why dogs are branded as man’s best friends. After domestication these animals have proven their worth as the affectionate and steadfast companions of man. Blood of ferocious wolves run in a dog’s veins so that in spite of domestication, the instinct to hunt and the ferocious behavior remained. Even well a mannered dog will attack if the inherent ferocious nature is triggered by a person or by a situation in the environment.

Dogs have the strength to knock people down. No one would want to mess with an aggressive dog as the strong jaws and the needle sharp teeth can easily cause fatal injuries. Dogs are the most popular choice for a pet as these animals form a strong bond with their owners. However, because of the increasing number of dog attack incidents some people can’t help but be wary whenever a dog is seen.

Why do dogs attack? The attacks of dogs are commonly caused by human behaviors that trigger the dormant ferocious nature of these animals. For all the care people gave the their pet dogs, a lot of dog bite incidents are caused by the victim’s own pet. Dogs are pack animals and as such an owner should be aware of the dog’s tendency to dominate. A pet owner may inadvertently allow the dog to be the leader of the pack. Pet owners are advised against allowing a pet to be pushy as this behavior can turn into aggressiveness that will make the dog attack at the slightest provocation.

Dogs are territorial animals. A dog will attack if potential danger to what is considered as its territory is perceived. An eating dog must never be approached as an attack is possible because the dog will try to protect its food. The human family is considered by the dog as a member of the pack. The children being members of the pack will be protected by the dog thus the screaming and laughter of playing children can make the dog attack.

Some people can be very cruel to dogs. Abused dogs may feel the need to attack when exposed to fearful situations. Sweet, loving and affectionate are the common descriptions given to dogs but abused dogs adopted from shelters would still have the tendency to attack due to a fearful or an aggressive temperament.
