Dog trackers have become very popular these days. What it essentially does is it helps the dog owner in keeping trail of their pet and in case it strays out of its usual route or area, it quickly and most efficiently helps the dog owner in finding his pet.

GPS (Global Positioning System) tracking system was originally developed by the US army. It is extremely accurate, satellite based system that typically pin points a location within few meters.

The study by the Council of Pet Population Study and Policy suggests that only 20 percents of dogs that stray off are actually rescued and bought back to their owners. The GPS dog tracking system works very efficiently to protect the pet from not only straying but it also saves it from a bigger accident like a car run over or another animal attack by giving accurate information about the pet. Most of these pets are rescued by the use of tags, microchips or tracking technology. Hence you will find most pet owners investing in a good, robust GPS dog tracking system since it increases the chance of finding his favorite pet if it gets lost. At time of buying it, it may seem slightly expensive. But ask a dog owner who has used such a GPS dog tracking system. He would be extremely happy to inform you of the benefits that he has actually derived by buying peace for himself and the safety for his pet.

There are two kinds of GPS dog tracking system. The one which works with the cellular carriers, generally transmit the location information of the pet through cell phone transmissions, enabling the owner to track their dog by the help of their phone or by checking the Internet. However, this tracking methodology does not work where cell coverage is not there and would require continuous service charges.

The second tracking system works through the standard radio waves. The GPS tracking systems utilizes the freely available radio waves, even though the area of transmission is often restricted within a given area, which works as a major constraint. Generally information about the location is sent due to the radio waves being received by a handheld gadget, demonstrating the actual real time information about the location of the pet.

However it is interesting to know how this technology works through the satellite based global positioning system which actually helps in pursuing and locating the missing pets. The collar which the pets wear is fitted with a transmitter. This transmitter sends alert signals to the owner, informing the owner if the dog has strayed. The knowledge about the pet straying is received by the owner through a transmission. This dog tracking GPS systems works exactly like the automobile tracking system. In a similar situation, the owner is informed about the strayed pet and then the systems keeps sending updates till the time the pet has been rescued. There are some GPS systems where the information has to be sent through a phone helpline. From there on the service representatives are pressed into service that track down the pet and pass on the good news to the pet owner.

It is only a pet owner who loves his pet dearly would tell you how much of a help these GPS dog tracking system could be. The system not only keeps a check on the safety of the pet but also informs the owner at the right time so that they are found quickly and before any mishap takes place. With time the GPS dog tracking system is increasingly becoming popular and prices are also slowly coming down. It not only saves the pet a lot of unnecessary hassles but also ensures there is no heartache. Hence not only do these dog tracking systems help the dog owners’ but also benefit society largely by ensuring lesser number of strays on the road.

However, before buying a GPS dog tracking system, one needs to do a thorough research. The two critical things to keep in mind are extended battery life and the coverage area suitable to your needs. There are other things which one would also have to consider like weight, waterproofing or the ability to withstand varied temperature variations. The one other critical point to consider is the size of your dog. If your dog is very small, it could be very painful for the pet to wear a GPS tracking system that is heavy leading to neck or back injury, if worn for an extended period.
